There is a 6 month ban on drilling in deep waters at the moment which Obama put in place after getting advice from a panel of experts. The problem is that the panel of experts advised a different course.

Now 'expert' panels can make good and bad recommendations and it is ok to commission a panel get their advice and not do everything they advise. However, there needs to be honesty about the fact that this is what is being done which doesn't seems to have happened in this case. Furthermore, there should be good reasons for ignoring a panel of experts you choose, which in this case there doesn't seem to be... We didn't ground air planes for 6 months after 9-11 and that turned out ok. As bad as this accident is, as far as I can tell it wouldn't have happened it people had been following the rules already in place.
